NICOLE ORLANDO VINCE LA NUOVA CATEGORIA “DONNA E SPORT” DEL PREMIO SEMPLICEMENTE DONNA

Conosciamo meglio Nicole Orlando, atleta paralimpica italiana di atletica leggera plurimedagliata. Detentrice dei record mondiali nei 100 metri e nel salto in lungo, la giovane campionessa classe ’93 è diventata, negli anni, il simbolo dell’inclusività nel mondo dello sport, facendosi portatrice di messaggi di grande forza e tenacia, riassunti nel motto “Vietato dire non ce la faccio”. Reduce dai sette titoli conquistati negli ultimi Euro TriGames di Ferrara, Nicole si aggiudica la nuova categoria “Donna e sport” del Premio Internazionale Semplicemente Donna.

Nata a Biella l’8 novembre 1993, Nicole inizia la propria attività sportiva a soli tre anni, tra le fila della Società ginnica La Marmora – Team Ability. Sono mamma Roberta e papà Giovanbattista ad iscriverla, lasciandola nella mani di Anna Miglietta, medagli adi bronzo ai Mondiali di ginnastica Ritmica di Cuba. E proprio da questa prima esperienza in palestra, Nicole scopre la sua attitudine per lo sport cimentandosi in molte discipline, quali la ginnastica e il nuoto, prima di approdare definitivamente all’atletica leggera.

Specializzata nei 100 e 200 metri, nel lancio del giavellotto, nel salto in lungo e nel triathlon, Nicole entra a far parte del giro della Nazionale nel 2013, in occasione dei Campionati Europei IAADS di Roma. A soli 20 anni è già vincitrice di tre ori nei 100 metri, nel salto in lungo e nella staffetta 4X100: un bottino sorprendente che bisserà l’anno successivo agli Open European Championship IAADS di Povoa de Varzim in Portogallo.

I Mondiali 2015 in Sudafrica segnano il suo esordio in un campionato del mondo: qui Nicole si conferma assoluta dominatrice dei 100 metri, dei 200 metri, della staffetta 4x100, del triathlon e del salto in lungo, conquistando quattro ori e un argento, e fissando il nuovo record del mondo nel triathlon. È proprio una foto scattata da Mauro Ficerai in Sudafrica, e postata sul profilo Facebook della FISDIR (Federazione Italiana Sport Paralimpici degli Intellettivo Relazionali) diventa virale, finendo per essere condivisa addirittura dall’allora premier Matteo Renzi, il quale commenta: “Avete fatto onore al nostro Paese, a tutti quelli che non si arrendono mai. Siete un esempio per tutti. La più brava di tutti è stata Nicole Orlando che ha vinto 4 medaglie d'oro (anche un record del mondo) e un argento. Ma bravi sono stati tutti gli atleti che hanno partecipato perché hanno dimostrato che l'Italia è all'avanguardia in questo campo”.

Da quel momento, in pochi giorni, la storia di Nicole fa il giro dell'Italia e del mondo tanto che il Presidente della Repubblica Sergio Mattarella cita la giovane atleta, insieme a  Fabiola Gianotti e Samantha Cristoforetti, nel suo discorso di fine anno: “L'Italia è ricca di persone e di esperienze positive. A tutte loro deve andare il nostro grazie. Sono ben rappresentate da alcune figure emblematiche come Fabiola Gianotti che assumerà la direzione del Cern di Ginevra, Samantha Cristoforetti che abbiamo seguito con affetto nello spazio, Nicole Orlando, l'atleta paraolimpica che ha vinto quattro medaglie d'oro”.

Il 2016 è, per Nicole, un anno intenso e ricco di esperienze: prima il coinvolgimento nell’11° edizione del programma televisivo “Ballando con le stelle” che la vede quinta in classifica in coppia con il ballerino Stefano Oradei; poi la partecipazione ai Trisome Games di Firenze, le prime Olimpiadi per atleti con la sindrome di Down; e infine la pubblicazione del libro “Vietato dire non ce la faccio” (Edizioni Piemme), scritto a quattro mani con la giornalista Alessia Cruciani, che ha riscosso un grande successo di pubblico.

In questo 2021, agli Euro TriGames di Ferrara, la campionesse biellese porta a casa prestazioni strepitose: sette titoli accompagnati da due record del mondo, quello ritoccato nel salto in lungo (3,55 metri) e quello stabilito nel triathlon con 2.289 punti.

NICOLE ORLANDO – category “Woman and Sport”

Nicole Orlando is an Italian Paralympic athlete and the current European record holder in the 100-m and in long jump. Suffering from Down syndrome, the young champion has become, over the years, the symbol of inclusiveness in the sport world, bearing messages of great strength and tenacity, summarized in her motto "Never say I can’t do it". Winner of seven titles at the last Euro Trigames in Ferrara, Nicole won the new category "Woman and sport" of the Simply Woman International Harmony Award.

Born in Biella on November 8th, 1993, Nicole started her sporting activity at the age of 3, in the Gymnastics association La Marmora - Team Ability thanks to her mother Roberta and father Giovanbattista that entrusted her to Anna Miglietta, bronze medals at the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in Cuba. Thanks to that first experience, Nicole discovered her aptitude for sports and started tries different disciplines, such as gymnastics and swimming, before finally choosing athletics.

Specializing in the 100 and 200 meters, in javelin launch, in long jump and in triathlon, Nicole joined the Italian National Team in 2013, in occasion of the European Championships IAADS in Rome. At only 20 years old, she had already won three gold medals in 100 meters, in long jump and in 4X100 relay: a surprising booty that she would have repeated the following year at the IAADS Open European Championship in Povoa de Varzim in Portugal.

The 2015 World Cup in South Africa marked her debut in a world championship: there Nicole confirmed to be the absolute champion of the 100 meters, the 200 meters, the 4x100 relay, the triathlon and the long jump, winning four gold and a silver medals, and setting a new world record in triathlon. In that occasion, a photo taken by Mauro Ficerai in South Africa, and posted on the Facebook FISDIR (Italian Federation of Paralympic Relational Intellectual Sports) profile, became viral and was shared even by then-Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who commented: "You have honored our country, all those who never surrender. You are an example to everyone. The best of all was Nicole Orlando who won 4 gold medals (also a world record) and one silver. But all the participating athletes was fantastic because they showed that Italy is at the forefront in this field".

Since then, in a few days, the story of Nicole went around Italy and the globe, so that the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, mentioned her, together with Fabiola Gianotti and Samantha Cristoforetti, in his New Year’s speech: "Italy is rich in people and positive experiences. Our thanks must go to all of them. They are well represented by some emblematic figures such as Fabiola Gianotti who will take over the direction of Cern in Geneva, Samantha Cristoforetti we followed through the space with love, Nicole Orlando, the Paralympic athlete who won four gold medals".

2016  was, for Nicole, an intense year rich in experiences: first of all, her partecipation in the 11th edition of the Italian tv show "Dancing with the Stars", in wihich which ranked fifth with the dancer Stefano Oradei; then the competition of the Trisome Games in Florence, the first Olympics for athletes with Down syndrome; and finally the publication of the successful book "Never say I can’t do it" (Edizioni Piemme), written together with the journalist Alessia Cruciani.

In 2021, at the Euro Trigames in Ferrara, she brought home some amazing performances: seven titles and two world records: the retouched one in long jump (3.55 meters) and the one established in the triathlon with 2,289 points.
