A MARIAVITTORIA RAVA IL RICONOSCIMENTO NELLA CATEGORIA “IMPEGNO SOCIALE E CIVILE”
Conosciamo meglio l’avvocato Mariavittoria Rava, presidente della Fondazione Francesca Rava NPH Onlus Italia, organizzazione che, da oltre vent’anni, si occupa di aiutare bambini, giovani e donne fragili o in condizioni di forte disagio, attraverso la realizzazione di progetti umanitari e la costruzione di ospedali, centri e scuole in paesi segnati da un alto tasso di povertà come Haiti. A lei va il Premio Internazionale Semplicemente Donna nella categoria “Impegno sociale e civile”.
È una tragedia quella che segna la vita di Mariavittoria: all’alba dei suoi 28 anni perde, in un terribile incidente d’auto, la sorella Francesca, di due anni più giovane, alla quale era fortemente legata. E proprio in virtù del loro legame e sulla base di una promessa che si erano fatte da bambine (nel caso una delle due fosse scomparsa, l’altra sarebbe andata a cercarla), Mariavittoria si mette alla ricerca di Francesca, partendo al suo posto per Lourdes come volontaria.
Francesca si era, infatti, laureata giovanissima in Economia e commercio, lavorava per un’importante società di revisione (KPMG) e, ogni anno, dedicava una settimana delle sue vacanze al volontariato accompagnando i malati a Lourdes. E proprio in quel di forte spiritualità, Mariavittoria, che aveva perso le certezze della propria fede, incontra Pedro, un giovane sacerdote messicano appena trasferito a Milano dalla sua congregazione, con il quale decide di rimanere in contatto. Da questa fortuita coincidenza, inizia la rinascita della giovane Rava che, in un momento di grande dolore e confusione, decide di seguire il suggerimento di Pedro: rendersi utile agli altri, facendo semplicemente ciò che sapeva fare, vale a dire l’avvocato.
Dando consulenze legali gratuite, conosce NPH Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos – i nostri piccoli fratelli, un’organizzazione umanitaria internazionale che, dal 1954, si adopera per salvare bambini di strada, orfani e abbandonati, accogliendoli nelle proprie case e negli ospedali situati in ben nove paesi, tra i più i poveri, dell’America Latina, in particolare ad Haiti. Quello che inizia come una consulenza legale e come un piccolo impegno da portare avanti la sera o durante i weekend, apre invece la strada alla nascita della Fondazione Francesca Rava NPH Italia Onlus che, da ormai vent’anni, aiuta giovani, donne e bambini fragili o in condizioni di disagio, in Italia e nel mondo.
Da allora Mariavittoria dedica la sua vita alle attività della Fondazione, affiancata da un team di volontari e persone che ne condividono la mission: in vent’anni ha permesso la costruzione, ad Haiti, di un ospedale pediatrico che cura circa 80.000 bambini l’anno, oltre a scuole e centri per la riabilitazione di bambini disabili. Inoltre, la Fondazione Rava si fa sempre trovare pronta anche di fronte alle emergenze più complesse da gestire: durante i terremoti di Haiti e del centro Italia, la risposta dei volontari è stata immediata, e nel corso della recente pandemia Covid19, gli aiuti della fondazioni hanno raggiunto 30 ospedali italiani, 50.000 persone in povertà, attraverso il progetto “SOS Spesa”, e 36.000 minori accolti in comunità e case famiglie, grazie all’iniziativa “In farmacia per i bambini”.
La filosofia della Fondazione Francesca Rava NPH Italia Onlus si basa sull’empowerment, e non sul concetto di assistenzialismo: perché soltanto cambiando il cuore delle persone, è possibile cambiare il mondo.

The lawyer Mariavittoria Rava is the president of the Francesca Rava Foundation NPH Onlus Italia, an organization that, for over twenty years, has contributed to help children, young people and women who live in conditions of great distress, through the implementation of humanitarian projects and the construction of hospitals, centers and schools in several countries marked by a high poverty rate such as Haiti. To her, the Award in the category "Social and Civil commitment".
A tragedy marked the life of Mariavittoria: at the age of 28, she lost, in a terrible car accident, her younger sister Francesca to whom she was strongly tight. And by virtue of their connection and because of a promise that they had made as children (in case one of the two had disappeared, the other would have looked for her), Mariavittoria set out to search for Francesca, leaving in her place for Lourdes as volunteer.
Francesca had, in fact, graduated in Economics and Commerce and she worked for an important auditing firm (KPMG) abut, every year, she spent a week of her holidays volunteering in Lourdes. And precisely in that spiritual place, Mariavittoria, who had lost her faith, met Pedro, a young Mexican priest just moved to Milan, with whom she decided to keep in touch. That lucky coincidence made Mariavittoria react to the great pain and confusion, following Pedro’s suggestion: make herself useful to the others, simply by doing what she could do better, that is the lawyer.
By giving free legal advice, she became acquainted with NPH Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos - our little brothers, an international humanitarian organization that, since 1954, has been working to save street children, orphans and abandoned kids, welcoming them to their homes and hospitals in nine of the poorest countries in Southern America, particularly in Haiti. What began as a legal advice and as a small commitment to be carried out in the evening or during the weekends, opened instead the way to the birth of the Francesca Rava Foundation NPH Italia Onlus that, for twenty years, has helped young people, women and children in uncomfortable conditions, in Italy and around the world.
Since then, Mariavittoria has dedicated its life to the activities of the Foundation, supported by a team of volunteers and people who share its mission: in twenty years it has allowed the construction of a pediatric hospital, in Haiti, that treats about 80,000 children a year, as well as schools and centers for disabled children’s rehabilitation. In addition, the Rava Foundation has always been ready to face the most complex emergencies: during the earthquakes in Haiti and central Italy, the response of its volunteers was immediate, and during the recent Covid19 pandemic, the aid of the foundation reached thirty Italian hospitals and 50000 people in poverty, thanks to the project "SOS Spending", and 36000 children has been welcomed in communities and shelters, thanks to the initiative "In pharmacy for children".
The philosophy of the Francesca Rava Foundation NPH Italia Onlus is based on empowerment, and not on the concept of assistance: because only by changing the people’s hearts, it will be possible to change the world.
